Having just shared the latest foreign direct investment data for California from World Trade Center LA, we now take a look at the latest trade data provided to us by the Consulate General of Canada in Los Angeles. 

Here are some of the headlines:

Sizing the Canadian Market for California

  • California sells $27.8 billion in goods and services to Canada annually.

  • Of this $16.6 billion are goods exports among which agriculture, telephones & AV recording equipment, computers, optical, medical & precision instruments and automobiles are the largest.

  • California exports another $11.2 billion in services to Canada annually with travel services, royalties, business & professional, tech, and financial services topping the list. 

  • 2 million Canadian travelers spent $1.6 billion in California in 2017.

California - A Key Market for Canada

  • California buys $26.9 billion in goods from Canada annually. 

  • Among the top goods imports are autos, plastics, animal meats, wood products, crude petroleum, and optical, medical & precision instruments.

  • 774 Canadian-owned businesses employ over 76k workers in California

  • Jobs created by Canadian direct investment pay $14,000 above average regional wage

Canada - U.S. Trade

  • Canada is the #1 customer for most states

  • Canada is the #2 source of foreign direct investment in the U.S.

  • Canada and the U.S. trade an average of $1.4 million in bilateral goods and services every minute of every day

  • Canada is the U.S. #1 export market

  • Canadian travelers spend $20 billion in the U.S. annually
