In 2019, New York exported $14.2 billion in goods and a further $8.3 billion in services to Canada making Canada New York’s #1 export market. And most of what New York sells to Canada as well as imports is with our closest Canadian neighbors - Ontario and Québec. In fact, 86% of New York’s imports from Canada come from these two provinces.
With over 680,000 jobs in New York dependent on trade with Canada and with USMCA, our freshly-minted bilateral trade agreement, as our roadmap, Ontario and Québec have a significant role to play in New York’s economic rebound. Canada is very much invested in New York’s success with nearly 500 companies employing over 65,000 New Yorkers.
And when we can safely travel again, the pent-up demand from Canada is huge. Consider that in 2017, 5 million Canadian travelers spent $1.2 billion in New York.
With all this in mind, we want to focus on rebound with our top economic partners. Join us as we welcome senior representatives of Ontario and Québec for a discussion with MAPLE New York Executive Director, John Costanzo, on how we can leverage our vital economic ties to accelerate our recovery together.
